I do not think that we (DBA/Developers) need to switch technology, we just need to extend our knowledge of Oracle World. if someone is limited to Installation, Patching and Backup/Recovery, he needs to upgrade quickly.
2/4. Only Oracle Database Instance can be autotuned, but the SQL and PL/SQL code cannot. We need to focus on this skill.
3/4. Less than 30 minutes downtime for all planned and un-planned actvities is the SLA and will be written in contract.
5. It is not new, only important thing is Oracle 18c Cloud based on Exadata, which will increase perfomance and reduce latency (like bare-metal) and bill.
5. I don't think Oracle is scared of Amazon (or vice-versa). Oracle has given a demo on various workloads to show how faster and cost effective their new cloud is. Oracle is too ...Amazon has 90% of the worlds cloud. Oracle is too late. They aren’t going to hurt Amazon. And with Amazon you can scale outward with many other technologies. Oracle is absolutely trying to pull the Dba jobs into their company. You say architect and design and etc are still good. Those are application side jobs. That’s more of a dev role and not a Dba role. The system Dba role is dead now. I have many friends who have years of experience as dbas. They are brilliant. But they have 0 years of experience as designers. That is absolutely the end of their career. It’s over. A Dba with 7 years of experience isn’t going to suddenly get a job as an architect against others who have been doing that already.

The way forward is to abandon oracle and learn non-relational technology. If the only job is as an architect then why would you do that for oracle. You might as well be an architect for Cassandra, hadoop, mongodb, dynamodb or many others. You aren’t going to survive anymore on just oracle alone. If 18c succeeds the market is going to be flooded with out of work dbas.

It also bothers me that oracle expects is to pay for training and strive for certs while they are trying to get rid of us. We build their product up. We advertise the features. Our existence supports it. We are the salesman and the evangelists. We are the ones who make it strong.

Oracle is too expensive. Ellison isn’t telling the full truth. Companies are going to see this and are going to use azure or aws. Oracle is not going to hurt Amazon. Amazon will be ahead of oracle forever.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8873109125023142810.post-8548204641462081802017-10-05T22:17:45.331+05:302017-10-05T22:17:45.331+05:30Hi,

As you have mentioned to start learning Tuning.
3.Larry did not say why do they need 30 min downtime in a year.
4.How much penalty oracle will pay in case downtime is increased > 30 min
5.Autonomous requires Exadata,RAC must to have. He also said about rolling fashion patching.. then what's new!

4.Interesting to know is how optimizer is self tuning..
