Oracle 18c Database - Autonomous Database Cloud

Larry Ellison introduced the first Autonomous Database Cloud with Oracle Database 18c at Oracle OpenWorld 2017, which runs on EXADATA infrastructure. The Oracle Autonomous Database Cloud uses ground-breaking machine learning to eliminate the human labor associated with tuning, patching, updating and maintaining the database and includes the following capabilities

1. Self-Driving: Provides continuous adaptive performance tuning based on machine learning. Automatically upgrades and patches itself while running. Automatically applies security updates while running to protect against cyber-attacks.
2. Self-Scaling: Instantly resizes compute and storage without downtime. Cost savings are multiplied because Oracle Autonomous Database Cloud consumes less compute and storage than Amazon, with lower manual administration costs.
3. Self-Repairing: Provides automated protection from downtime. SLA guarantees 99.995 percent reliability and availability, which reduces costly planned and unplanned downtime to less than 30-minutes per year.

Following are the 10 key points Larry Ellison mentioned at Oracle OpenWorld 2017
1) This is the most important thing we’ve done in a long, long time.
2) The automation does everything. We can guarantee availability of 99.995 percent, less than 30 minutes of planned or unplanned downtime.
3) Amazon's best Oracle Database Service RDS is not true Elastic and Automated
4) Amazon’s guarantee doesn’t count when you’re down for any reason. It doesn’t include downtime or maintenance, or patching, and certainly doesn’t cover downtime if there’s a bug.
5) We guarantee your Amazon bill is cut in half – and that will be in your contract.
6) You’re automating away the job of database professionals. So we’ll see a migration of database skills to focus more on schema design, analytics and setting policies for what’s mission-critical. Database pros will have a lot more time to focus on securing data.
7) Autonomous Database Cloud usages dynamic elastic hardware allocation
8) Autonomous Database Cloud usages features like Exadata, RAC, ASM, Active Data Guard and Flashback Technology for System Failure, Patching, Upgarding, Regional Outage and User Error.
9) Database BOYL is introduced with Paas, and minimum configuration of 1 OCPU + 1 TB will cost 300$ per month with 30% discount with Monthly Dollar Volumn Commitment.
10) Oracle Database 18c with Autonomous cloud will be for Data-Warehouse from December 2017 and for OLTP from June 2018

Finally Larry Ellison compared different workload on Oracle and Amazon Cloud
Workload Type         Amazon-Time Amazon-Price Oracle-Time Oracle-Price
Financial Analysis         255s $0.23 34s $0.04
Retail Analysis         261s $0.23 35s $0.04
Insurance Analysis         282s $0.25 26s $0.03

My take on Oracle 18c Database with Autonomous Database Cloud:
It is good that Oracle is going to introduced features like these on cloud and I hope Oracle Cloud lives to the expectations and pricing. Oracle is going to give tough fight to Amazon for Cloud Space and I hope consumers will be the one who will get the benefits (features, service and low pricing).

    1. It is not yet available on Cloud yet. I hope down the line it will be available on both.

  2. What do you feel about DBA jobs with 18c? Will they be replaced and cut down? Will DBA skills no longer be relevant or required?

    1. I think DBAs need to be more focused on Applications now. Data Security, Architecture Design, Schema Design, Tuning and also various other things for which DBA is required. Yes if someone is limited to Installation, Patching and Backup/Recovery, he needs to upgrade quickly.

  3. Thanks for clarifying Nimish so quickly. Does this also mean that PL/SQL developers will still be needed in future?

  4. Was the machine learning have the capability to identify the application issues, based on the functionality we need to fix the defects which comes under the production support& enhancements was these roles will be eliminated being a PL/SQL developer.
If machine learning will adopt all these challenges,i could be lucky being a machine learning learner.

    1. I dont think any jobs of developers or dba are at risk. Oracle Database Cloud is being more focused on Application development rather than maintenance jobs. We would have more time to develop, enhance and secure our database.

  5. I wonder why this is available only on Exadata? Any comments.

    1. Not sure, but I think Oracle is extending their bare metal cloud further. I am mainly concern over pricing :)

  6. So they finally ate up all the DBAs jobs

    1. I would say with cloud repeated maintenance jobs like Installation, Patching and Backup/Recovery are at risk. Data Security, Architecture Design, Schema Design, Tuning and also various other things for which DBA is required.

    2. Majority of the DBAs do backup&recovery & patching only. I think they should now switch to other databases otherwise it will be too late for them. Oracle ditched them so badly.

    3. Data Security, Architecture Design, Schema Design, Tuning, Application Support and other things on which DBAs need to move on now.

Just another thing to learn - that is a good thing.

Should have called it 1 trillion C, for proper differtiation.

Nice to see Mr. Ellison still has his competitive chops and is not going to willing let Mr. Bezos waltz off with his lunch.

Might be goid to go work for a Cloud company, if employment is your concern.

If you cannot beat the robots - go to work for them.

  7. Hi,
    I would like to know..
How much more time we have to switch in technology ? I mean, what will be the time it will be live in all environments? May be, this is depnd on client's. still any idea reg. This
    2. As Larry mentioned that this will be auto-tuned databases, Any scope for intermediate and Beginners to focus on tuning? As you have mentioned to start learning Tuning.
3.Larry did not say why do they need 30 min downtime in a year.
4.How much penalty oracle will pay in case downtime is increased > 30 min
5.Autonomous requires Exadata,RAC must to have. He also said about rolling fashion patching.. then what's new!

4.Interesting to know is how optimizer is self tuning.. In case of auto tuned databasesm.
5.Why are they scared so much about Amazon..

    1. 1. I do not think that we (DBA/Developers) need to switch technology, we just need to extend our knowledge of Oracle World. if someone is limited to Installation, Patching and Backup/Recovery, he needs to upgrade quickly.
2/4. Only Oracle Database Instance can be autotuned, but the SQL and PL/SQL code cannot. We need to focus on this skill.
3/4. Less than 30 minutes downtime for all planned and un-planned actvities is the SLA and will be written in contract.
      5. It is not new, only important thing is Oracle 18c Cloud based on Exadata, which will increase perfomance and reduce latency (like bare-metal) and bill.
      5. I don't think Oracle is scared of Amazon (or vice-versa). Oracle has given a demo on various workloads to show how faster and cost effective their new cloud is. We need to wait for it and compare our workload performance with Amazon and decide accordingly. It is a win-win situation for consumers.

  8. Amazon has 90% of the worlds cloud. Oracle is too late. They aren’t going to hurt Amazon. And with Amazon you can scale outward with many other technologies. Oracle is absolutely trying to pull the Dba jobs into their company. You say architect and design and etc are still good. Those are application side jobs. That’s more of a dev role and not a Dba role. The system Dba role is dead now. I have many friends who have years of experience as dbas. They are brilliant. But they have 0 years of experience as designers. That is absolutely the end of their career. It’s over. A Dba with 7 years of experience isn’t going to suddenly get a job as an architect against others who have been doing that already.

The way forward is to abandon oracle and learn non-relational technology. If the only job is as an architect then why would you do that for oracle. You might as well be an architect for Cassandra, hadoop, mongodb, dynamodb or many others. You aren’t going to survive anymore on just oracle alone. If 18c succeeds the market is going to be flooded with out of work dbas.

It also bothers me that oracle expects is to pay for training and strive for certs while they are trying to get rid of us. We build their product up. We advertise the features. Our existence supports it. We are the salesman and the evangelists. We are the ones who make it strong.

Oracle is too expensive. Ellison isn’t telling the full truth. Companies are going to see this and are going to use azure or aws. Oracle is not going to hurt Amazon. Amazon will be ahead of oracle forever.
